The Force Awakens_5Star Wars The Force Awakens

is the seventh Movie in the brill Star Wars series of movies. Having recently bought the rights to the saga Disney is banking a lot both financially and in terms of reputation upon its success. It’s fair to say that they have a lot to live up to as previous Star Wars movies didn’t just define the genre but set all the box office records it has to beat. Star Wars A New Hope was a ground breaking movie, it brought Science fiction to the large screen in a way most folk couldn’t even comprehend before. It was so ground breaking that even as it was being made many of the crew working on it didn’t think it was going to be a success. Luckily George Lucas held steady in his belief that he could make a sci-fi movie for 9 year olds and we now have seven brill movies.

Before I continue I must warn you that plot spoilers will commence from here on in.

The Force AwakensAbout 30 years or so after the Second Death Star was destroyed the First Order has risen from the ashes of the Galactic Empire with a new more deadly super weapon. Its goal is to destroy the Republic and crush the rebellion led by Princess Leia. Hans Solo has gone back to his smuggling roots and Luke Skywalker has vanished while looking for the first Jedi Temple.
Star Wars the Force Awakens introduces new characters to the saga. Poe Dameron, is a resistance pilot whose mission is to obtain a secret map leading to Luke Skywalker. But the village on Jakku where his search has led is attacked by storm troopers led by Kylo Ren a former pupil of Lukes who was seduced by the dark side. Poe is captured in the attack and taken away to be tortured for the map that he entrusted to his droid BB-8. Amongst the Storm troopers is FN-2187 (later named “Finn” by Poe), trained from birth to obey orders and kill without hesitation he finds the reality of being a Storm Trooper difficult, later after the attack he decides to free Poe and help him escape. The pair crash back on Jakku and believing Poe Dameron to have died in the crash Finn finds himself wandering alone in the desert wastes. After a long trek Finn meets up with a scavenger named Rey and BB-8 unfortunately the First Order are not too far behind. They are chased through a desert settlement and take refuge in the stolen Millennium Falcon that’s been left to rust in the desert.

The Force Awakens
Needless to say Hans Solo and Chewbacca aren’t too far away and it’s not too long before Rey, Finn and BB-8 are in the thick of the eternal battle between the good and dark side of the Force.
Being honest I have to say I was expecting the start of another disappointing trilogy like the Phantom Menace which despite a strong cast never really had a brill and engaging story. The movie and indeed the entire second trilogy got lost amongst all the green screens and flashy special effects. However Star Wars The Force Awakens was brill right from the start. The story line is original and engaging with some good plot twists. It also doesn’t lean too heavily on the original cast members like say the Star Trek reboot has on Leonard Nimoy, the sets and locations also look natural and real.

The Force Awakens
J.J. Abrams pulled off a masterpiece of movie magic by doing the impossible; building upon what is already the biggest thing in movie history. And I think a lot of it is down to the underlying story, sure you need a lot of good special effects in science fiction but without an engaging story to build a script upon any movie no matter what genre will fail. A lot of directors and producers fail to understand that in their rush to make money.
Star Wars the Force awakens is brill stuff, now all that remains is to wait until 2017 for the next movie. I wish time travel were possible lol.
